Biodiesel Production

Biodiesel offers us the opportunity to give back to the environment by allowing us to pursue an alternative fuel that allows us to decrease our dependence on fossil and petroleum based fuels. There are several main types of biodiesel production that are available, and the type chosen usually correlates with the size of the operation. For example, since this particular type of fuel can be produced by individuals, this means of production will greatly vary from the rules and regulations put forth by commercial bodies. Essentially though, the production of this biodiesel is accomplished through either transesterification or alcoholysis. This means of production makes use of catalyzing vegetable oils (new or used) or animal fats with short-chain aliphatic alcohols (most commonly methanol or ethanol, which can produce an unpleasant odor so it’s best to situate these storage tanks further away from any living quarters).

There are a number of kits and parts available that make it relatively easy to produce your own biofuel. While there are a few steps during this biomass fuel production that do require some additional care and consideration, the whole of the process is safe enough for even people with relatively low to no experience to take an active part in production. Also, the flexibility in production location lends itself to keeping the production costs low since producers and manufacturers don’t have to pay extra for special circumstances. And it’s especially important to keep such things in mind since are current overdependence on fossil fuels has limited our price options.
